The Goal

The goal is to provide very low cost and very reliable end-user computing in emerging communities that can be competently managed locally. The purpose is to bring information access to emerging communities that improves their ability to manage and expand their community resources and to thereby participate more effectively in their regional economy.

A successful system will provide access to meaningful information on weather, markets, transportation, health care and medical services, education, community events, governmental participation and sports and recreation. These services must be highly localized so that the benefits of participation in the program are apparent immediately.

The community can then move rapidly through stages of development that have taken other communities much longer. This would include a substantial increase in community wealth and therefore in community health, education and quality of life. A goal would be to move the community to full participation in an extended local community within ten years.

The capability to deliver this service exists today. The next steps are the proof-of-concept projects and then the development of the localized images with local applications and local content.

The solution is a global comprehensive development and delivery system based on open source operating systems and applications and on PowerDeveloper.org Architecture Open Reference Platform products for distribution and end-user deployment.
